Rose House by Sergey Makhno

Ukrainian architecture firm Sergey Makhno Studio proposes its latest project, the minimalist ‘Rose House’, nestled deep in the Ukrainian mountains. according to Makhno, ‘the name rose came from the blooming red walls.’

It's a guesthouse made of concrete, weathering steel, glass and water. As a result of its clean cut silhouette, the 160 sqm building may seem uncomplicated, however it contains a plethora of sophisticated elements. The sleek steel exterior is subtly immersed in nature, whilst the interior is open and inviting due to the implementation of floor-to-ceiling windows. Additionally, the architects created an artificial pool making the water a material of the same importance as the concrete, glass and steel found in the house’s construction.

The layout is designed as a freely flowing space with transforming functional zones — the tenant has the possibility to convert spaces by moving or erecting walls.
